5th SEPA – DENTAID Symposium: the dentist and the dental hygienist, a single team

SEPA_DENTAID_041_edited

Once again DENTAID and the Spanish Society of Periodontology and Osseointegration (SEPA) joined forces to carry out this symposium, which has become a leading scientific meeting for oral health professionals.

This Symposium focused on updating dentists and hygienists on news relating to periodontal and peri-implant diseases, as well as the best ways to prevent these diseases, how to treat them and how to keep them under control or prevent their recurrence.

The Symposium was given by doctors of dental medicine, experts in the field, including Dr Silvia Roldán, who explained that 11.2% of the world population is affected by severe periodontitis and that over 12 million Spaniards suffer from periodontal disease. Dr Elena Figuero made special emphasis to the principal systemic diseases related to periodontitis: diabetes, cardiovascular disease and adverse effects during pregnancy are some of the ones most strongly backed by science.

According to Dr Andrés Pascual, more than 74% of patients do not know what peri-implant disease is, and therefore education constitutes the frontline of a preventive approach. Along these lines, both Dr María Rioboo and Dr Ana Carrillo stressed the importance of investing time in education for patient health, and they mentioned a more preventive stance in which patients assume responsibility and participate, which was something upon which all speakers of this Symposium agreed.

Dr Gerardo Gómez chose to highlight the importance of the oral health team and its role in promoting health. The key is to team up for general health, marking prevention as the first and essential step: brushing your teeth at least twice a day and getting regular check-ups at the dentist.

In addition, DENTAID took the opportunity to launch a solidarity action backed by VITIS hygienists (www.higienistasvitis.com). The initiative entailed involving the participants to donate a toothbrush to the organization Odontología Solidaria (Solidary Dentistry) by pressing a button at any of the official counters. Without a doubt, thanks to the involvement of the professionals, it was a success, and more than 4,800 brushes were donated!

New VITIS® children’s product range for the protection and care of our little ones during their different stages of growth

VITIS_infantil

VITIS, whose aim is to offer personalised solutions for the proper oral hygiene of everyone’s mouth, is now concentrating on the mouths of the littlest of the household, offering VITIS® baby, VITIS® kids and VITIS® junior to satisfy children’s oral needs, while helping to instil good daily hygiene habits.

The care of baby teeth and later of permanent teeth is paramount for the proper oral development of our youth. “If we focus on the oral requirements of children during their growth, it will be easier to maintain good health and hygiene and therefore avoid cavities and other diseases later in life”, explains Dr Xavier Calvo, Periodontist, DDS and Medical Advisor at DENTAID.

From 0 to 2 years: VITIS® baby and tooth eruption

The tooth eruption process usually occurs between 6 months and 2 years of age, but even before this phase, it is important to start a daily oral hygiene routine, by cleaning the gums with a moist piece of gauze or a silicone thimble, after each feeding.

With the eruption of the first teeth, inflammation of the gums, discomfort and crying begins. That’s why the VITIS® baby gel ointment for gums is the perfect ally for this difficult stage, thanks to its soothing action. It does not contain aromas, sugars, added dairy, gluten, fluoride or colourants. Low abrasivity: gentle on tooth enamel.

The VITIS® baby toothbrush is perfect for starting a daily cleaning routine from the eruption of your baby’s first teeth. It is designed to fit a child’s mouth and for easy handling by an adult, and is gentle on a baby’s delicate gums and teeth, thanks to its ultra-soft, high quality Tynex® filaments.

From 2 to 6 years: VITIS® kids and the care of baby teeth

The main objectives in this stage include establishing a daily habit of cleaning baby teeth, removing dental biofilm (bacterial plaque), and getting little ones to acquire the responsibility of taking care of their own mouths, although this still has to be supervised by an adult.

The VITIS® kids toothbrush is specially designed to be easily handled by a child, thanks to its ergonomic handle that fits their hand and its very small head which is suitable for the size of their mouth and an indicator of the amount of gel that the child should use. Soft, high quality Tynex® filaments effectively clean while gentle on teeth and gums.

VITIS® kids cherry-flavoured dental gel is formulated specifically to prevent tooth decay in children as of 2 years, thanks to its age-specific fluoride concentration of 1,000 ppm, complying with SEOP and EAPD recommendations.

From 6 to 12 years: VITIS® junior and the emergence of permanent teeth

The VITIS® junior toothbrush is designed to make brushing easier for children starting at age 6, thanks to its ergonomic handle and head size adapted to children at this stage. The soft Tynex® filaments leave their mouths clean and are adapted to their needs. And the protective cap helps to keep the brush in the best conditions.

VITIS® junior tutti-frutti flavoured dental gel has been specially formulated to prevent the onset of caries, with a fluoride concentration adapted to this stage of growth (1,450 ppm of fluoride). In addition, its panthenol content helps care for and protect their gums.

At this stage, a child usually controls the swallowing reflex and this will allow VITIS® junior mouthwash to be used as part of their daily oral hygiene routine, to complement the care of their mouth with an anticaries action and a gum care actio
